This is a great little light. Battery life sucks, but with a simple mod it works out great.
Don't buy if your camera/camcorder does NOT have night vision June 24, 2010 N. Hill (Houston) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this Sima IR20 because (like a nut) I read some reviews that said if you can see the infrared light on a remote control with your camera and/or camcorder then this Sima will work with your equipment. BIG mistake! Both my camera and camcorder could see the infrared light on a remote control, but when I tried to use the sima light I could not see any improvement at all. Let me make this perfectly clear, the poor review I gave this product is NOT because of the product, its because I ignored the most important piece of information which is "DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNLESS YOUR CAMERA/CAMCORDER has NIGHT VISION capability". "Low light" capability and "night vision" capability are two different animals. It also doesn't matter if your camcorder can see 1 or 2 lux light, if it doesn't have NIGHT VISION CAPABILITY, it will not work with this product. So don't be fooled by people who say that if your camera can see the infrared light on a remote then this Sima will work with your product. IT WON'T! In general, I'm not sure specifically WHICH cameras/camcorders has this feature but if yours don't SAY "Night Vision" or something very similar to this statement then don't think it will work on your equipment.
I know I repeated myself several times in this review, but my intention is to save you the time and aggravation of waisting your money on "wishful thinking". I'm glad Amazon doesn't have a disclaimer on refunding people's money due to peoples "hard-headedness". I'm giving doing business with Amazon.com 5 stars!
Great IR Light May 28, 2010 T. Goodwin The Sima SL-20IR Night Vision Light is a great light for the price. The only downsides to it is it only holds a charge for 45 minutes if your lucky, and another is when you have the power adapter plugged into it the lights will not power up it only charges the battery. If you planned on using it on a tripod with the power supply forget about it. That's really the only downsides and other than that it's very light weight and really easy to use. The shoe mount that comes with it is very sturdy. I was impressed by that.
Battery Life Sux / Distance Sux May 25, 2010 dbmdude (Tacoma, WA) I bought these with the thought that I could get as good a view as they advertise (see pictures on the packaging) and it is nothing like that. The image is horrible and the battery life is horrible. I really wish I had never bought them. Save yourself some trouble and get a IR flood light of the same frequency that runs on 115 like this one [...].
Useless with Canon HF100 April 12, 2010 EmbeddedFlyer (Seattle, WA United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
While this might work OK with SOME video cameras, it's useless with my Canon Vixia HF100. It turns out some cameras, such as the HF100 and its siblings, have internal infrared filters to prevent infrared from distorting normal video. These cameras can't "see" the light produced by this video light.
This is something Sima should make clear but they don't. They should have a list of known compatible cameras. I'm told many of the newer digital HD video cameras have infrared filters in them. So buyer beware!
